Chapter 3: Jessica Sullivan & Amanda Lizine

Plot summary: In chapter three scout talks about her first day of school and how Walter gets her yelled at from miss. caroline her teacher. After that she stuffs Walters face in the sand at the school yard because she’s mad at him. Then Jem invites him over for dinner and Scout judges Walter for putting molasses on his food. Calpurnia takes Scout aside and yells at her for making fun of Walter. After that we meet the Ewells who are very poor and only attend the first day of school.Miss Caroline wants to send them home because she finds them dirty and she found a “cootie” in their hair.

Major Changes and Developments: There were many changes and developments in chapter three. One of the changes in Scout is we find out that she can be very physical when she gets mad since she stuffed someones face in the sand. Also we meet new characters such as Walter who doesn’t have a lot of money so their family doesn’t like to take what they cant return. Another family that we meet is the Ewells. The Ewells children only go to school on the first day, they are very poor and dirty. The last thing we learn in this chapter is that Scout is learning more and getting better citizenship from her dad than her school teacher.

Significant Quotes: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

That quote is spoken by Atticus when talking to Scout giving her moral advice.

“I told Calpurnia to just wait, i’d fix her: one of these days when she wasn’t looking i’d go off and drown myself in Barker’s Eddy and then she’d be sorry: besides, I added, she’d already gotten me in trouble once today: she had taught me to write and it was all her fault.”

In this quote Scout is talking in her childish ways about Calpurnia because she is mad at her for yelling at her for questioning ways of company.
